    Mammoplasty

Breast is the female organ and represents motherhood. Women might experience some psychological problems due to small or large breasts. Mammoplasty is one of the most common cosmetic surgery around the world. Mammoplasty is the cosmetic surgery to fix the shape of the breast when a woman is not happy with them. Women might have breast enlargement, sagging or decreased volume due to pregnancy, genetic factors and some diseases. Cosmetic surgeries can be preferred to fix these problems and correct the nipple.

    How is mammoplasty operated?

Mammoplasty is operated after detecting the problems of women with their breasts. In mammoplasty, breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast lift are some options. With breast reduction or augmentation, it is possible to have multiple interventions like correct the nipple and lift the breast. The mammoplasty operation depends on the type of surgery.

How is breast augmentation surgery operated?

Breast augmentation is fat injection or silicone implant. This surgery is preferred when women have a breast reduction or breast removal due to different regions. In fat injection method, special filler material in the form of fat collected from the individual is injected. Breast augmentation with fat injection is not permanent and this method is not commonly preferred. Another method for breast augmentation is a silicone implant. Implants that are widely preferred around the world ensure permanent enlargement. General anaesthesia is applied for this operation. A cut is made from the underarm area or nipple area and silicone implants are placed. This cut is made from invisible places that can be hidden under the cloths. Since aesthetic sutures will be used, there will be minimum scarring. The surgery duration might change between 1 and 1.5 hours depending on the procedure.
After breast augmentation surgery, patients can be discharged on the same day or hospitalised for one day. It is possible to experience pain for a few days and this pain will be controlled with pain killers.

    How is breast reduction operated?

Large breasts can cause psychological problems as well as physical problems like backache, lumbar pain and hump. Surgical intervention can be preferred to reduce the size of large breasts that appear large due to various reasons. Multiple surgical methods can be performed for breast reduction surgery. The most common one is inverse T cuts. A cut from the nipple enables to remove the excess tissue and the surgery is completed. General anaesthesia is applied for this operation. There is no need to remove the aesthetic sutures after the surgery; but if the sutures are surgical sutures, they must be removed in 15 days. Breast lifting and tightening are achieved during the surgery. The operation approximately lasts between 1.5-2 hours.

How is breast lift surgery operated?

Breast lift surgery is an operation to determine the saggy area and to lift that area. This operation is preferred to eliminate the shape problems due to gravity, sagging after childbirth and sagging after weight gaining and losing. Breast lifting surgery is operated depending on sagging on the breast. The operation duration changes between 1 and 4 hours. This surgery is operated under general anaesthesia. Breast lifting collects excessive tissue and corrects the shape as well. Patients are hospitalised for one day after the surgery.

What is the process before mammoplasty?

Before mammoplasty, patients are examined in detail. First, patients go through physical examinations. Breast shape problems and the patient’s desires are considered. Patient’s medical history such as the family history of cancer is investigated. Previous diseases of the patient are considered. The patient is asked whether she uses regular medication. Then, breasts are analysed in detail with tests like mammography and ultrasound.
After these tests, the doctor will decide on the procedure. When needed, multiple interventions might be recommended. After deciding on the procedure, routine blood tests are carried out and anaesthesia sensitivity are controlled. After setting the surgery date, the doctor explains what patients must do in detail.

Patients must stop eating and drinking at least 8 hours before the surgery.
It is possible to take a bath one day before the surgery.
Since alcohol and smoking negatively impact blood circulations, these should be quitted one week before the surgery.
Patients are asked to stop using blood thinners one week before the surgery.
If you are regularly using any medication, you must inform your doctor and use according to doctor’s recommendations. Patients must be ready at the hospital at least 2 hours before the surgery.

What is the process after mammoplasty?

It is normal to have pain a few days after mammoplasty. The doctor will prescribe pain killers to reduce this pain.

Antibiotic treatment is prescribed for 1 week to prevent post-op infection.
Patients must be fed with liquid food for the first couple of days. Patients must slowly start to solid food.
Patients are asked to rest at home for 3 days after the surgery.
Patients can take a bath 3 or 4 days after mammoplasty.
Patients are asked to avoid travelling for at least one week.
Patients must avoid heavy activities for one week after discharge and rest as much as possible.

Patients must wait at least 3 weeks for sexual intercourse.

Full recovery after mammoplasty is 4-6 months.

    Before surgery

As in other breast operations, you need to discuss why you want to have this operation and what do you expect from this operation with your doctor.
